Honda’s history began in October 1946 when Soichiro Honda established the Honda Technical Research Institute in Hamamatsu, Japan. The initial aim was to develop and produce small 2-cycle motorbike engines. In 1948, Honda Motor Co. Ltd. was officially established as a joint project between Soichiro Honda and Takeo Fujisawa. Initially, the company produced motorcycles, becoming the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer by 1959. Honda reached a production of 400 million motorcycles. The Super Cub C100, introduced in 1958, became a hit in Japan and the U.S.

In 1963, Honda launched its first vehicle, the T360 mini pick-up truck. That same year, Honda also produced the S500 sports car. In 1969, Honda car sales began in the United States with the Honda N600.In 1973, Honda began to focus on eco-friendly technology. The Honda Civic, with its CVCC engine, was the first vehicle to meet U.S. Clean Air Act emissions standards in 1974. In 1999, the Honda Insight became the first North American hybrid on the market.
Honda continues to innovate, with milestones such as becoming the first major automotive manufacturing facility to use wind turbines for electricity in 2014 and the debut of the Honda Clarity, a fuel cell vehicle, in 2016.
